Tsa Surgery

Joint replacement surgery has come a long way over the last decades. Those who suffer from many various illnesses and injuries can benefit from this type of surgical procedure. One of the most common and most successful types of surgeries is the total shoulder anthroplasty or TSA. TSA surgery is the ideal way for many patients to see improvement in mobility. It can allow you to get back to doing the things you enjoy without pain or discomfort.

What is TSA Surgery?

Total shoulder arthroplasty, TSA surgery, is a surgical procedure that replaces a diseased or damaged shoulder ball and socket joint with a prosthetic implant. This type of surgery is generally useful in cases where patients have severe pain and mobility issues due to arthritis or injury.

TSA surgery is a very popular type of treatment and is usually extremely successful. Primarily, the goal of shoulder joint replacement surgery is to reduce pain and restore function, strength and motion. In a healthy shoulder socket, the cartilage is smooth, allowing the ball and socket to glide easily. In a damaged shoulder socket, part or all of the cartilage is missing which causes bone to rub on bone when moving the shoulder. This can be painful and debilitating.

Shoulder joint replacement surgery replaces the old, worn join with a new, artificial joint. Most people find that the new joint relieves their pain and restores mobility. After surgery you will be able to return to doing activities that you used to enjoy such as participating in sports, taking part in yoga or other fitness activities or just being able to work in the garden.

Do I Need Total Shoulder Arthroplasty?

If you suffer from shoulder pain due to arthritis or other factors that does not improve with medications and other non-operative treatments, you may be a good candidate for TSA surgery. Proper diagnosis and assessment must be completed first to determine your condition. This is typically done with x-rays or with an MRI. These tests will evaluate the bone condition as well as the condition of the supporting tendons.

Total shoulder arthroplasty surgery is done while the patient is sedated. After successful surgery you will be able to begin rehabilitation therapy in a day or two. Movement is restricted for some time following the procedure and will begin to have better mobility as they complete physical therapy. Patients can usually return to work in a few weeks and can expect to recover to the point of full, unrestricted use in about eight weeks.

Patients should be relatively pain free in about six months following surgery and after a year they are just about completely pain free. The length of time for recovery depends greatly on the condition of the muscles and tendons prior to surgery. Participating in therapy will ensure a better and faster recovery period. If you are experiencing chronic shoulder pain you may be in need of replacement surgery. Contact our office to schedule a consultation to discuss your condition and the possible options.
